Thoughts After Listening to a Podcast by Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income
One of the bloggers that I love to follow is Pat Flynn of smartpassiveincome.com. In one of his recent podcasts with blogger Corbett Barr of thinktraffic.net, he discusses how his blog took off after being featured on another blogger’s website. He was averaging about 10 visits/day and then suddenly his visits jumped dramatically. Now, I am working very hard to build the content of my site and to network. As a very small site so far, I am going to take the advice of Pat and Corbett.
One of the things that I liked the most about the podcast was that both Pat and Corbett were pretty clear on the fact that nothing is set in stone when it comes to getting traffic to your site. When you read tips that say you have to do certain steps to get any traffic results, that might not be the case for your particular site. You need to understand your visitors and do a combination of several things.
A good strategy for getting traffic is to reference other bloggers in your own posts. If you feature some of your favorite bloggers frequently, you are more likely to get noticed and – hopefully—get a post about YOU on their site. Writing guest posts is also another way to get noticed. A very important point they make is that you shouldn’t overlook other small blogs. I may make it big (I hope) but other bloggers that I follow may get there first. It wouldn’t hurt to have links back from their sites if they make it first, right?
One of the best ways to get traffic to your blog is to make videos. I was actually reading an article in Internet Retailer this morning about companies expanding their sales through product videos. Once you get the hang of editing your videos, they can actually be quicker than writing long posts. Pat hosts podcast interviews which are also a very good method of getting traffic. Another good example of using videos and podcasts can be found on the site Entrepreneurs Journey by Yaro Starak. There are a lot of video and podcast directories out there in addition to YouTube and iTunes that can help you reach more people. I personally think that this method has more of a professional edge and helps visitors feel as if they know the blog author.
If you’d like to listen to the podcast with Pat Flynn and Corbett Barr, it’s SPI 008.
Do you have any methods that are working well for your site?

That article is really well written, no wonder Pat included it in his tweet. I have quite a blockade about writing blog articles on English lately. Seems like you are gonna stick to your path, so wishing you good luck.
Thanks! I have so many things that I know I’ll want to add to my site. I guess that’s one of the best things about setting up a site about something I’m really eager to learn about!
I have learned so much from Pat Flynn. He is fun to listen to on his podcasts and he provides a lot of information. Thank you for sharing the interview.
Lindsay,
Pat is one of my favorite people to follow because he shares so much information without being heavy on promoting his own products/affiliate links. He seems to care a lot about his readers and he spends a lot of time interacting with everyone on Twitter, Facebook, email, and his site. I’ve been following Pat for over a year and I have learned a lot from him and the people that he interviews for his site.
